I bought this book for m wife. I was encouraged to read it, I reluctantly liked her first book so I took to the challenge. I am not into love stories, but Kifer drew me right in. I got new insights into how women are challenged with cancer set backs. I felt as though Kifer was sharing her own life. Great writing with twists and turns to keep me interested. As with her first book it deserves a Hallmarks movie.Product details

This isn't just a book for women. This is a book for everyone who respects courage, passion and an engaging, credible story told with clarity and an engaging sense of humanity. A really good read.
An enchanting love story that wraps you up in its world, making you regret leaving it after its final pages. Beautifully written, I was drawn in by the characters and the choices they make, giving one insight into those who battle health issues while navigating the real world. Tessa bravely chases her own dreams and does not give up on love when all seems to be lost, a lesson for us all.
In Tessa Portrait of a Survivor, Kathleen Kifer has drawn on her own raw experiences as a long-term cancer patient and amputee to create a remarkable and inspiring love story.
When Tessa Burke, a former model and wife of an affluent business man requires more surgery after a long and difficult recovery from breast cancer, she is devastated, and as she tries to adjust to the shocking loss of an arm to the disease, her husband inflicts further pain. Tessa discovers that Max, repelled by her appearance, has found another sexual partner, and although he doesn't want a divorce she insists that the marriage is broken and they separate.
As co-founder with Max of the Burke Foundation for the Cure, and leader of a support group for breast cancer victims, Tessa has counseled and given confidence and hope to many frightened women, but at forty-four, even as she continues to encourage others, she struggles to regain her balance. That is when a gifted photographer, Luke James, re-enters her life at a fund-raising luncheon. Years before, when he was a handsome but immature young man just beginning his career, he had been infatuated with her warmth and beauty and even kissed her passionately at her wedding to Max. The memory of that kiss and her unexpected response to it has stayed with him, and now, in spite of her disability, he is still attracted to her. Hired by the support group women to produce a calendar to raise money for the Foundation, he pursues a relationship, but Tessa, nine years older than Luke and unable to believe that anyone could find her desirable, strenuously resists.
Yet in spite of the many challenges Tessa faces as she tries to overcome feelings of sadness, loss, and inadequacy, she learns how amputees can adopt new methods to bathe, dress, drive, work, and live (difficulties also being experienced by many traumatically injured members of the military), and with the help of doctors, family members, and friends she slowly regains courage. Later, when she and Luke finally reveal their physical and emotional selves to each other in some extremely sensitive and tender bedroom encounters, we rejoice in the power of love to help ease her wounded body and repair her damaged spirit.

It is, however, deeper, broader, and more powerful than more conventional romances, and readers will be uplifted by Kathleen Kifer's satisfying conclusion.

Kathleen Kifer is the strongest, spunkiest, toughest woman with a huge heart and the bravest Author I know to share her story in Tessa A Portrait of A Survivor. Kathleen has an incredible gift for writing especially when it came to telling her own story. You could tell by just reading it that she was passionate about what she was writing about because she lived it. They always say write about what you know and love. Not to mention by writing this must have healed her and put closure on some events in the book that took place.
Many people like myself who have never personally had a family member diagnosed with any form of cancer may be interested to read this book. They would have a better understanding of what a cancer patient goes through. There is a character whom I actually have a huge soft spot for named Chloe whom got diagnosed with Breast Cancer. In this book Kathleen walks you through the stages of thinking you have the disease, to finding out you do, testing, treatment, etc. Plus, all the emotions, mental parts of it, and of course the physical. Not to mention how the family and friends react. Many parts I will be honest was hard for me to read and I cried. I never knew half of what Breast Cancer Patients went through. Nor did I know how fast it could spread and to other body parts.
One topic that was touched on that I feel strongly about not getting proper medical treatment because they don’t have health insurance. Everyone should have health insurance even if it is Medicaid. For someone who might have any type of cancer and not be able to looked at because they don’t have health insurance is just a crime!!
I was actually shocked to find out to save someone’s life from breast cancer spreading you need to remove the arm. My heart went out to Tessa at this moment in time! I could totally understand where she would feel self-conscious about as she called it her “stump” and didn’t want many people to see it. We all have insecurities about our bodies. Nobody Is perfect. This just now makes her unique. So, I totally understood when she wanted nothing to do with the prosthetic arm! I loved how she stood up to the guy and how understanding Dr. Camden was.
One thing I liked about this book is that she mentioned a lot of places in Buffalo, NY. I too am from Buffalo, NY and smiled when places were mentioned that I knew of. Not many authors put Buffalo, NY locations in their book. So, it is nice to be recognized. Especially if it isn’t for the snow or the Bills loosing.
I love how Kathleen thanked the Lewiston Writers Group for supporting and encouraging her throughout every step of her endeavor.
It was pretty special that her friend Lynn Passanese posed for the beautiful cover of the book as Tessa.
