In these pages, you will read about many tried and proven ideas and suggestions designed to stimulate fresh choices that confront the status quo. Learn about ways to expand your options, find fresh perspectives, create more opportunities, and achieve the fulfilling outcomes you desire. Reinventing Normal will show you how to reinvent your normal.

After reading this book, I purchased four more and gave them to family members! Ms. Cross offers something for everyone no matter where you are in life or your relationships. I not only felt better about myself as a wife and mother after reading this book, I also was smiling. Cross's insight and wit are a winning combination. The only short-coming of this book is the lack of a "click here" button for more in depth information on the topics covered. As is, the book is more akin to enjoying a good cup of tea with an old friend--a friend who just happens to be a respected family therapist.

Just like her first book, this one is helpful and insightful. This is a very worth while read and I will be able to apply it to my life.
Looking for some reading that makes you feel good about yourself and others, this is a book for you. Easy to read, just very comforting. Answers that are staring a person in the face, but sometimes we don't see it ourselves, takes someone else to show us.
Just a great read.
This is what you get when someone puts together all their best advice and wisdom from being a therapist into a novel. Everything you need to know is in this book. Darlene covers it all and makes it easy to understand. There are so many topics in this book we can all relate to and need a refresher on. This book will change your life and help you to become the best person you can be. Another amazing novel by Darlene Cross.
I really recommend reading her book "A New Normal" along with this book. A New Normal focuses on grief and loss and this book gives a person fresh eyes on different areas of life such as relationships, family, parenting, and career to name a few. Just like A New Normal, this book keeps the reader interested and it is easy to read. I read it in one sitting. There is a saying "Change your perspective, change your life." I'm not sure who said that but this book will certainly help you change your perspective.
I think many times people don't get the help they really need when looking for a book because most are written in such a way that are "clinical" or "boring". Let's face it - it's more interesting to read something that feels like you are curled up talking to a good friend who has "been there". That is what you get with Darlene Cross. She understands because she not only has the professional training but so much of her own life and emotions has been given to the reader. If you want an easy read with information you can walk away and use to better your life, this is the book you want.
As a social work student, I found this book very helpful. I keep finding myself asking my professors to clarify what they consider normal vs abnormal. Cross does a beautiful job providing short (page or so long) vignettes that address a wide variety of issues--pet loss and divorce, stress and self-care, aging and parenting, romance and texting. She delivers these with a down-to-earth, funny and friendly style that makes you feel like you're an old friend sitting in her living room, chatting about a little of everything. It's really wonderful for those of us who have not had some of these life experiences live divorce or parenting to be able to learn from others' experience and hopefully carry that into our practice.
Perhaps what made this particularly useful for me was that it's essentially a collection of nuggets of wisdom gained through her experience and years as a therapist. In one or two pages, she can summarize what might have taken a student like myself years and years of trial and error, training and research to learn.
She also gives you a good sense of how the thinking has changed in the years she's been practicing. For me, that's a big advantage, because things can look very cut in stone when they're printed in textbooks, but this book gives you the permission to question it!
I also found this book inspiring and refreshing from a non-social work perspective. I found myself mumbling aloud, "I know!" with such tidbits as saying "No, not 'just one,' one!" to the restaurant host, or missing your lack of bathroom privacy after your dog passes. Again, I felt like I was being given permission to say, "I need to take care of myself, and it's NOT selfish."
As a reader, I have to admit that I read this book all in one sitting. It was engaging and fun to read. Every vignette is different, unique, and exciting. How could I NOT want to read just one more? Probably the best way to read this book is one vignette at a time, to give you time to digest and incorporate it into your practice or your life. I personally plan to keep this book with my social work texts as a resource I can refer back to.
This book does a great job answering that question! It delivered easily digested information that left me feeling hopeful about so many of life's challenges.
After reading this book, I purchased four more and gave them to family members! Ms. Cross offers something for everyone no matter where you are in life or your relationships. I not only felt better about myself as a wife and mother after reading this book, I also was smiling. Cross's insight and wit are a winning combination.
